Public health (Promotion of healthy lifestyles)

Each financial year (April 1 to March 31), pharmacies are required to participate in up to six health campaigns at the request of NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE&I). This usually involves posting and distributing leaflets provided by NHSE&I; see more details below.

In addition, pharmacies are required to undertake prescribing-related interventions in key areas of public health concern, such as encouraging people to quit smoking. The requirements are defined in the specifications:

Essential Service 4 – Service Specification for the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles (Public Health)
Please note that changes to health campaign requirements have been made since the specification was published.

Compulsory themes of the health campaign in 2022/23

The PSNC is currently in negotiation with the Department of Health and Social Care and the NHSE&I on Year 4 (2022/23) of the Community Pharmacy Contract Framework. Once negotiations are finalized, we will announce details of the 2022/23 campaigns through our usual communication channels.

Campaign Data Collection

Where requested by the NHSE&I, each pharmacy must record the number of people to whom information is provided under any of these campaigns. NHSE&I may also request additional information in relation to the campaign.

Any additional information to be requested will initially be discussed with the PSNC. The purpose of requesting additional information will be to help assess the impact of the campaign and to assist in the development of future policies. Contractors will be informed of additional information that needs to be collected and provided before the start of the campaign.

NHSE&I may request that campaign information be provided to them electronically.

Guidance from the PSNC on the supply of materials for the six public health campaigns

If leaflets and posters or other patient materials are to be part of a public health campaign, these should be provided to the community pharmacy contractor by NHSE&I or a source of free leaflets, such as the order line of health and social service publications, could be highlighted before the start of the campaign. It is not a requirement of the Service for the Contractor to purchase flyers or go online and download and print flyers.
